More Speech and Debate Students Qualify for Nationals

Matthew Long and Hari ViswanathanShady Side Academy sophomore Speech and Debate Team member Mathew Long placed second in Congress-Senate at the Pittsburgh District NSDA Qualifier on Saturday, March 26, at Seton LaSalle High School, qualifying to advance to the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) National Tournament in Louisville, Ky., in June. Sophomore Hari Viswanathan placed third in Senate at the district qualifier and will serve as the first alternate for the NSDA National Tournament.

Long and Viswanathan join four other SSA Speech and Debate Team members who previously qualified for national tournaments earlier in March: junior Nichole Poltinnikov (Lincoln Douglas Debate) will also compete at NSDA nationals while junior Maya Leyzarovich (Congress-Senate) and freshmen Audrey Jiang and Sunny Zhao (Duo Interpretation) will compete at the National Catholic Forensics League (NCFL) nationals in Washington, D.C., on Memorial Day weekend.
